Boukhobza Maltese Blood Orange Tree
Boukhobza Maltese Blood Orange
The Queen of Oranges: An Exquisite Selection for the Discerning Home Orchardist
The Boukhobza Maltese Blood Orange is an elite, historical selection of the famous Maltaise Sanguine family, widely considered the pinnacle of Mediterranean sweet oranges. The variety arose as a spontaneous bud sport in the private estate of the Boukhobza family (Jardin Boukhobza) in the historic, fertile agricultural plain of La Soukra, Tunisia. In France, the Tunisian Maltese oranges are so revered for their sublime dessert quality that they are proudly called the "Queen of Oranges," consistently commanding massive premiums over standard winter citrus. The original lineage was preserved by the French national citrus repository in Corsica before making its way to the UC Riverside Citrus Variety Collection. This variety possesses an inherent genetic adaptability that allows it to thrive and produce premium fruit across California's diverse microclimates.
While classic Mediterranean texts note its ability to drop acid early, field evaluations in California demonstrate that Boukhobza functions beautifully as a mid-to-late winter anchor. As the fruit hangs on the tree into the new year, it undergoes a magnificent transformation. The trade-off for its delicate nature is a soft, thin, and pliable rind that makes the fruit far too fragile for modern commercial packing lines or long-distance shipping. Because it bruises easily and cannot tolerate rough industrial handling, Boukhobza has been largely passed over by commercial growers. This fragility is exactly what makes it the ultimate connoisseur’s backyard tree: a variety of unparalleled eating quality that one can only experience by picking it fresh from the tree.
My Personal Take: I have had the privilege of tasting Boukhobza grown in three distinct regions: the Central Valley, Riverside, and my own garden in the Santa Clara Valley. It is absolutely delicious across all of them, proving it has a phenomenal climate range for California. It is a spectacular fit for Northern California backyards. I have noticed that for a sweet blood orange grown in Northern California, it develops remarkably good color. A variety like Moro will give good color early on, but it simply isn’t as sweet as the Boukhobza. Given how much colder the nighttime temperatures are in California compared to the mild coastal plains of Tunis, I would not be surprised if the Boukhobza develops a better color in California than in its native Tunisia.
The Flavor & Sensory Experience
- Mellow Sugar-to-Acid Balance: An exceptionally sweet, low-acid flavor profile that delivers intensely rich, mild, and highly aromatic juice without any sharp, aggressive tartness.
- Progressive Demi-Sanguine Pigmentation: A true semi-blood orange where internal color development relies on chilly winter nights. The interior reveals an understated pattern of delicate burgundy flecks and veins that deepen into rich, dark crimson as the season progresses.
- Melting, Rag-Free Texture: Virtually seedless with an incredibly tender, rag-free flesh that melts in the mouth. It yields an exceptionally rich, beautifully colored juice that stands out as some of the finest fresh orange juice you can squeeze.
The Backyard Advantage
- Extended Hang Time: Holds its premium fruit quality exceptionally well on the tree, allowing you to store the fruit naturally on the branch as the internal sugars and colors continuously intensify.
- Rootstock and Fruit Quality: This semi-dwarfing rootstock is chosen specifically for its positive impact on flavor, consistently producing fruit with high sugar concentrations and a rich flavor profile.
- Easy Backyard Adaptability: Features a healthy, reliable growth habit that establishes beautifully with minimal fuss, naturally developing into a productive, well-sized tree for home gardens.
