Bred in 1917 by geneticist Howard B. Frost in Riverside, California, the Allspice Tangelo is a cross between an Imperial grapefruit and a Willowleaf mandarin. Until now, this variety had never been officially released to the public. It is an excellent choice for backyard growers who want to enjoy a historic citrus variety with a distinct, spicy flavor profile that you cannot buy in grocery stores.

My Personal Take: Although never officially released, this variety somehow escaped into the hobbyist community. While many who tasted it loved the unique, spicy flavor and wanted to grow it, trading uncertified cuttings became a severe disease risk with the arrival of the Asian Citrus Psyllid and HLB in California. Backyard grafting of uncertified budwood made it a potential vector for spreading disease. It is a true fruitmentor exclusive, and I am happy to finally make it safely available to you as a certified disease-free tree.
